Setting Up Parental Controls on DISH Network: A Parent's Guide

Parental controls are essential for families who want to ensure their children have access to age-appropriate content. DISH Network offers robust parental control features that give parents fine-grained control over what their children can watch. This guide walks you through setting up and using these features effectively.

The foundation of DISH's parental controls is the rating system. You can block content based on TV ratings (TV-Y, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA) and movie ratings (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17). Simply select the highest rating you want to allow, and the system will automatically block anything rated higher.

Channel blocking provides another layer of control. If there are specific channels you don't want accessible, you can block them entirely. Blocked channels won't appear in the guide and can't be accessed without entering the parental control PIN. This is useful for blocking premium channels or networks that consistently air content you consider inappropriate.

Time-based restrictions allow you to limit viewing during certain hours. For example, you might allow unrestricted viewing on weekend mornings but restrict access to certain channels during school nights. These schedules can be customized for different days of the week, giving you flexibility to match your family's routine.

The PIN system ensures that only adults can modify parental control settings or access blocked content. Choose a four-digit PIN that's easy for you to remember but difficult for children to guess. Avoid obvious choices like birthdates or sequential numbers.

Individual profiles can be created for different family members, each with their own parental control settings. This allows you to give older children more freedom while maintaining stricter controls for younger ones. Each profile can have its own PIN, and users can switch between profiles from the main menu.

Purchase restrictions prevent children from ordering pay-per-view content or making other purchases without authorization. Even if a child discovers the parental control PIN, purchase restrictions add an additional layer of protection for your wallet.

The system also allows you to block specific programs by title. If there's a particular show you don't want your children watching, you can block it specifically while allowing other content on the same channel. This granular control ensures you're not overly restrictive while still maintaining appropriate boundaries.

DISH's parental controls extend to the DISH Anywhere app, ensuring that restrictions apply even when children are watching on mobile devices. Settings configured on the Hopper automatically sync to the app, maintaining consistent protection across all viewing platforms.

Regularly reviewing and updating your parental control settings is important as your children grow and mature. What's appropriate for a 10-year-old may be too restrictive for a teenager. DISH makes it easy to adjust settings as your family's needs change.
