Starlink Installation: What to Expect from Start to Finish

Installing Starlink internet service is a straightforward process, but understanding what to expect can make it even smoother. This guide walks you through the entire installation process from initial site survey to final testing.

The process begins with a site survey to determine the optimal location for your Starlink dish. The dish needs a clear view of the sky with minimal obstructions. Trees, buildings, and other obstacles can interfere with the signal, so proper placement is critical. Southern Star technicians use specialized tools to identify the best location on your property.

The Starlink dish, officially called Dishy McFlatface by SpaceX, is a sophisticated piece of technology. It contains a phased array antenna that electronically steers its beam to track satellites as they pass overhead. The dish is designed to be weather-resistant and can operate in temperatures ranging from -22°F to 122°F.

Mounting options vary depending on your property and the optimal dish location. Common mounting solutions include roof mounts, ground mounts, and pole mounts. Roof mounts are popular because they typically provide the clearest view of the sky, but ground mounts may be preferable if roof access is difficult or if the best view is from ground level.

The installation includes running a cable from the dish to your router location. Starlink provides a 75-foot cable with the standard kit, which is sufficient for most installations. If a longer run is needed, extension cables are available. The cable is designed to be weather-resistant and can be buried or run through conduit for a clean installation.

The Starlink router is compact and easy to set up. It creates a WiFi network that covers most homes without additional equipment. For larger homes or properties with challenging layouts, mesh WiFi extenders can be added to ensure coverage throughout your space.

Power requirements are modest—the system draws about 100 watts during normal operation. It plugs into a standard electrical outlet, and the power supply is included with the kit. Some users choose to add a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to maintain internet connectivity during brief power outages.

Initial setup involves connecting the system and allowing it to orient itself. The dish will automatically adjust its position to optimize the signal. This process typically takes 15-20 minutes. Once oriented, the system will begin downloading firmware updates if any are available.

Testing is the final step of installation. The technician will verify that you're getting the expected speeds and that the connection is stable. They'll also show you how to use the Starlink app to monitor your connection and troubleshoot any issues that might arise.

Most installations are completed in 2-4 hours, depending on the complexity of the mounting location and cable routing. Southern Star technicians ensure that all work is done to professional standards, with attention to both functionality and aesthetics.
